Score: New York Yankees - 3 @ Cleveland Guardians - 2 (Game 1)

GOTD Result: WIN

GOTD Record: 8-3

Recap:

What else can I say folks, we are setting a new standard for the first quarter of the season.  New York propelled us into new territory, with a five game win streak for our GOTD selections on the line.  What has impressed me the most about this Yankees team has been the strength of the pitching unit.  It wasn’t attractive from an offensive standpoint, as the score indicates, but the pitching on both sides was a sight.  Clark Schmidt continues to prove himself as a starter for the pinstripes, only giving up one earned run through five innings.  The bullpen continued what they had been doing through the first ten games, shutting down the last couple frames.  Oswaldo Cabrera continued his hot start to 2024 with a key two run home-run in the top of the sixth, which proved to be the decisive one.  The game got a little bit messy in the eighth, Gleyber Torres turned a routine double play into a fielding error and a run for the Guardians.  Clay Holmes was able to tie up the loose ends and secure the Yankees a great road win.  Overall, I think the Guardians are showing some cracks that weren’t apparent early on, interesting to see how they respond against the sweep.  Chase for five straight continues.

News Around the League 4-14-2024:

Brewers battling with the Yankees for the best record in the league was not something I had in my rolodex of predictions, that is for certain.  Sometimes, strange things happen in the world of baseball.  Other news, the Mets continue to show life offensively, despite losing 11-7 at home versus the scorching hot Royals.  The Royals continue to prove that they are not coming, but they are here.  Young talented side with plenty of veteran knowledge, exciting stuff happening in Kansas City.  Another team that is impressing are the Saint Louis Cardinals, their sub .500 record doesn’t speak to the talent on the team.  A tough early schedule as well but adding Sonny Gray to a beleaguered starting rotation from a year ago, has shown great return early.  I expect this team to be firmly in the playoff hunt throughout the 2024 season, I’m happy to be wrong on this one.

Off the field, there has been a lot of talk regarding the cause for the increase in Tommy John related surgeries in the league.  In just the first month of the season, we have seen a multitude of star pitchers go down with injury.  Players such as Gerrit Cole, Spencer Strider, Shane Bieber, Eury Perez, and even Shohei Ohtani.  Some point the finger to the new pitch clock, others point the finger at over-exhausting players from their time in little league, and some to a combination of both.  It is a tough discussion to be had because this was not a major league wide concern up until ten years ago.
