Game Preview:

Oh boy, do we have a great game to spotlight for our Monday’s GOTD.  It took me one glance at the deck to know, and that is not to say that there aren’t other solid options.  These teams represent two of the past three world champions and carry a similar ego.  Typically you would expect that to be true both offensively and defensively, but for these sides the defense has been a struggle as of late.  The Braves lost a great young star in Strider, that can’t be ignored, they still have plenty of talent to spread out and the negative numbers have been quite shocking.  In a three game set, against the then struggling Mets, the Braves pitching unit gave up twenty-nine runs.  That is an outstanding number.  On the other side, the Astros have been arguably the worst pitching team in the MLB.  They are third to last in the MLB in total runs allowed.  The pitching deficiencies are one thing, the offense is anything but deficient.  Atlanta currently sits fourth in the MLB in total runs scored and the Astros are not too far behind at thirteen.  Don’t let that fool you, the gap between thirteen and four is only eleven runs, these teams compare rather well.  In their most recent bout, the Astros showed some backbone at home winning a heavy weight series against the division rival Rangers, 2-1 .  In those three games, the Astros scored a combined twenty-five runs.  So what does this all boil down to? Well, we have two prolific offenses against two pouress pitching units, all I can really expect from this one is fireworks.  That is reason number two that I am referring to this as my GOTD.  The Astros are giving Spencer Arrighetti the nod. Fresh off of a three inning outing against the Royals in which he gave up seven earned runs on seven hits.  Not too great.  In response, the Braves are wheeling out Darius Vines for the first time since last September.  Vines did show some positives, although in only a few appearances in 2023.  Very tough spot to make your season debut in a young career.  I see the pitching matchup as a complete toss up, I don’t expect either guy to have a great time.  Astros fans are eager to see a highly regarded team improve on a slow 6-11 start.  The Braves had a cakewalk with the Marlins which ended up being a battle for a split in two games.  I am putting my five GOTD pick win streak on the Astros to maintain some offensive prowess and simply out hit the Braves.  The Astros still have a couple of stud bullpen arms, which I anticipate to be the decider in this one.  As long as the Stros maintain a close distance with the Braves through the first four frames, I think they have a better than not shot at winning this one.  Let’s hope!
